In preparation for the upcoming U.S. election, the Chamber wants to ensure that all voters are properly informed regarding pertinent election dates and general information. Provided below are the dates for state and federal positions. For local information, please consult your municipality's website.
The voting for the U.S. Presidential Election occurs on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November every year divisible by four, with our next election on November 5, 2024.
What is the point of "after the first Monday"? If November begins on a Tuesday, then the election would be the following Tuesday, November 8.
On your ballot, there will be two main candidates: one for the Republican party and one for the Democratic party. However, there will be other names listed for third party candidates. Notable other names include independents Green Party candidates.
Gubernatorial Elections
The election for governor varies by state, but a majority of the United States follow the same pattern. On the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November each "midterm" year (the even number year between Presidential Elections, e.g. 2022 and 2026). The next gubernatorial election will take place on November 3, 2026.
In Pennsylvania, governors serve four-year terms and are limited to serve a second successive term.
Senatorial Elections
The election process for U.S. Senators is somewhat complicated, but we hope to provide clarity. U.S. Senators serve six-year terms, but every two years, one-third of the Senate is up for election. This ensures that there is an election for new Senators every midterm and general election year. Again, regardless of if they are being elected during a general or midterm election year, the voting occurs on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. Senators have the ability to serve as many terms as possible, assuming they are re-elected.
Pennsylvania's most recent senatorial election was in 2022, with Democrat John Fetterman winning the seat in Congress. Pennsylvania's next senatorial election will be on November 5, 2024, with incumbent Democrat Bob Casey facing off against Republican David McCormick.
Representative Elections
The U.S. House of Representatives Election is the most straight-forward of any of the non-presidential elections. All 435 seats in the House are up for re-election every two years, so again every general and midterm election year. The election takes place on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. Representatives also do not have any term limits, so they again can serve as long as possible.
Pennsylvania holds 17 representatives, and they will all be up for election on November 5, 2024.
